The humble cork block is probably one of the most handy yoga props available. Blocks can help support us in more physically challenging poses, as well as help us release and relax more in a yin or restorative practise. My favourite way to use a cork block though is for self massage and myofascial release. Fascia is a thin layer of connective tissue that encases absolutely everything in the body, it is a watery web that is the ‘glue’ that holds everything together. By massaging ‘sticky’ areas of fascia we can release tension and hopefully free up more space and movement within the body.
I use the Ekotex Yoga cork block as this provides quite a firm massage, which suits me. I would say if you find this too strong initially, cover the block in a blanket or t-shirt to provide a bit of padding, you could then work towards using just the cork block itself.
My favourite places to massage are across the fore head and lower back as these tend to be the most relaxing to me. In this self massage with block video below though, we massage into the lats as well 🙂 I also have a short video on how to massage your neck using a cork block which is amazing for tension headaches and a great way to relax at the end of the day.
If you buy from Ekotex Yoga, use code HMFYOGA to get 10% off 🙂 Hope you enjoy the practise and happy massaging!
